Maharashtra New Age Rules for CBSE Admission 2027–28 (October 2026)

The Maharashtra government announced revised minimum age criteria for Nursery to Class 1 admissions, to be phased in from 2027–28 onward. The new cut-off date will be 30 June (replacing the current 30 September / 31 December norms). These rules do NOT apply to 2027–28 admissions. Children already enrolled in Nursery–Class 1 this year are fully exempt.

Every year, around this time, the same anxious question reaches us through calls, WhatsApp messages, and school gate conversations: “We want to enrol our child in a good CBSE school in Pune — where do we even begin?”

It's a fair question. The CBSE admission process in Pune isn't complicated once you understand how it works — but most parents go in without a clear picture and end up either missing deadlines or scrambling for documents at the last minute.

This guide is Innovative World School's honest, practical answer. We're a CBSE-affiliated school on Dehu-Alandi Road, Chikhali-Moshi, and we've been through the admissions season with hundreds of families since 2019. Here's everything you actually need to know.

How Does the CBSE Admission Process in Pune Actually Work?

Here's the thing most guides skip: CBSE does not run a centralised admission portal for private schools. You cannot go to cbse.gov.in and fill out an application. The Central Board sets curriculum standards, affiliation rules, and broad eligibility guidelines — but every CBSE-affiliated school handles admissions independently.

When you're looking at CBSE schools in Chikhali or anywhere in Pimpri Chinchwad, you're applying directly to each school on their own form, following their own timeline, and getting a seat based on their process.

CBSE Age Criteria for Admission 2027–28: What Age Does Your Child Need to Be?

This is where most parents get confused and where a wrong assumption can push admission back by a full year.

The standard cut-off date used by most Maharashtra CBSE schools is 30 September 2026 — meaning your child's age is calculated as of that date. Some schools use 31 December 2025. Always confirm with the specific school before assuming eligibility.

AGE CRITERIA TABLE (2027–28)

Step-by-Step CBSE Admission Process at Primary Schools in Chikhali-Moshi

Here is the typical admission journey at most well-run primary schools in Chikhali-Moshi. Expect minor variations between schools — the sequence below applies broadly for the 2027–28 academic session.

1
October – November

Research and Shortlist

Visit school websites, call admissions desks, and narrow down to 2–3 schools based on location, curriculum quality, transport coverage, fees, and what other parents say. For pre-primary schools in Chikhali-Moshi, also assess class size, outdoor space, and teacher-to-child ratio.

2
October – December

Campus Visit and Enquiry

Visit the shortlisted campuses in person. A good school will answer fee questions transparently, and not pressure you. At IWS, walk-in visits are welcome during school hours — no appointment needed.

3
November – January

Collect and Submit the Registration Form

Most schools issue a printed or downloadable registration form. Complete it fully, provide all the necessary details, and submit before the deadline. Innovative World School does not change any non-refundable registration fee for the registration form.

4
December – January

Document Verification

The admissions team reviews submitted documents. The admission team takes you in for the counselling session for the admission and explains all the process in detail.

5
January – February

Interaction / Readiness Assessment

For Nursery to Sr. KG: a short, friendly parent-child interaction also a proficiency check test. The counsellor observes communication, temperament, and basic responsiveness. From Class I and above a brief age-appropriate readiness check in language and numeracy is observed by the team. At IWS, our pre-primary interaction is child-led and pressure-free.

6
February – March

Admission Confirmation and Fee Payment

Selected applicants receive an offer of admission with a fee payment deadline within a given speculated time period. The seat is confirmed only after payment.

7
April

Academic Session Begins

The CBSE academic year runs from April to March. New admissions typically begin an orientation in early April. Transport routes, uniforms, and books are usually communicated in March through school.

Documents Required for CBSE Admission in Pune 2027–28

Missing documents are the most common reason admissions get delayed. Here is a comprehensive checklist for most best CBSE schools in Pimpri Chinchwad Pune. Requirements vary slightly by school and class.

CBSE Admission Documents Checklist — Nursery to Class X

Birth certificate of the child (Municipal Corporation / hospital issued)
Aadhaar card of the child, mother and father
two recent passport-size photographs of the child, mother and father
Passport-size photographs of father and mother (2 each)
Proof of residence — Aadhaar / utility bill / rental agreement / passport
Transfer Certificate (TC) from previous school — for Class II and above
Previous school report card / mark sheet — for Class II and above
Caste / category certificate if applicable (SC / ST / OBC / EWS)
Vaccination report, blood group report of child (required by some schools)
Completed and signed registration / admission form along with enquiry form
Signed undertaking on CBSE rules and regulations (school provides the format)
Note: Bring originals for verification along with two sets of self-attested photocopies. Do not submit original documents permanently unless specifically asked. Keep a personal folder with all copies ready before you begin visiting schools.

What the Interaction or Assessment Is Really Like

For Nursery and Jr. KG, the “assessment/ proficiency test” is not a written test — CBSE guidelines prohibit formal testing at the pre-primary stage. It's typically a 10–15 minute interaction where the teacher observes how the child communicates, follows simple instructions, and responds to a new adult. You will likely be in the room.

Do not over-prepare your child. A rested, comfortable child who hasn't been drilled the night before will always do better than one who arrives tired and anxious from “practice sessions.” The school is observing readiness and temperament — not academic ability.

For Classes I–X, the interaction may include a brief, age-appropriate check in language comprehension and basic numeracy — appropriate to the class previously completed. It is not a competitive exam.
